In Latin America, access to abortion is limited, either due to restrictive legislation or access barriers. In addition, in countries like Venezuela, there is a shortage of medicines, which leads to difficulties in obtaining and using contraceptives on a continuous basis, which increases the risk of an unwanted pregnancy.
So what can you do if you have an unwanted pregnancy and you are not in Colombia? Some women in countries with strict legal restrictions are forced to seek a clandestine solution, for example, to obtain the famous “Cytotec” on the black market, but without any guarantee, and that is only if you are in the first weeks of pregnancy.
32% of pregnancies in Latin America and the Caribbean end in abortion [1]
Banning abortion does not make women have fewer abortions, it just makes them take more risks. Forcing you to live a pregnancy against your wishes and possibilities is another form of gender violence. Autonomy over your body and your life is a human right.
Only you know what the best conditions are for procreation. At Oriéntame we believe that when a person faces an unwanted pregnancy, they have the right to decide whether to continue and take on the parenting, enter an adoption program or opt for terminating the pregnancy.
At Oriéntame you can request a free, legal and safe abortion
No matter what your nationality is, if you can come to Colombia [2], you can exercise your right to decide whether or not you want to have children, with whom and when, even if you are already pregnant.
In February 2022, the Colombian Constitutional Court granted women, girls, trans men and other people with the possibility of becoming pregnant the freedom to decide on their reproduction.
Thus, during the first 24 weeks of pregnancy, all people, regardless of their socio-economic status, age, gender, educational level, place of origin, nationality, ethnicity, health status, physical or mental condition, can request a legal and safe abortion without having to explain the reasons for this decision. And health services are obliged to respond to these requests within a maximum of 5 days.
After the 24th week of pregnancy, the person requiring the abortion service must be in one of these three situations:
